Does Youtube Allow Ai Voice?

For the avoidance of doubt, an AI voice, also known as text-to-speech, is a synthetic voice which artificial intelligence has generated. Today, it is widely used in a varied line-up of settings, from customer service chatbots to GPS systems and voice-activated devices such as Alexa. And as we’ve written before, AI seems to have become an unstoppable force, with the relevant technology heightening the possibilities all the time.

Meanwhile, AI video is a new and exciting development.

The US video-sharing website YouTube has over 2.7 billion active users as of 2023. With more than half (52%) of those who go online using the platform at least monthly. Daily, the site has more than 122 million visitors.

There’s no denying its influence. It’s hardly surprising that people often ask us what the score is with AI voice and YouTube. Here, we’ll try and set the record straight on this issue.

The obvious benefits include the ability to create voiceovers while eliminating the need for a human actor. Saving time and effort while potentially bringing in new subscribers more quickly. Additionally, the capacity for exporting transcriptions as closed captions could make your videos far more accessible to viewers with a hearing loss.

So is AI Voice Allowed On YouTube or Not?

Under the platform’s Terms of Service, there are no restrictions on the use of AII voice on your videos. So you don’t have to worry about violation of the social media giant’s policy on the matter for now.

However (and it’s quite a big one), there are a couple of terms worth a note:

  • Voice AI must comply with YouTube’s community guidelines, for example those surrounding hate speech or offensive content.
  • Clearly, you own the copyright to the original content. However, copyright issues could crop up if you use someone else’s material without their permission, regardless of how you use the material. Much will also depend on the AI voice provider you choose and the rights they’ve secured.

Can You Monetise AI Voiced YouTube Videos?

There’s no reason why you can’t do this. Provided that your videos meet YouTube’s content guidelines and policies. However, do note that using AI voice for commercial purposes, including audiobooks and similar paid content, may need the software provider or copyright holder’s permission. Check your provider’s terms of service before you do anything else.

What To Check Before Proceeding

It’s important to go for a high-quality AI voice over that sounds as near as possible to an actual human voice. Here are some other points to bear in mind as you make your decision:
