When it comes to audio recording and editing, the first software that comes to mind is Adobe Audition. But did you know that Adobe Premiere Pro is also a powerful tool that can do the job? In this blog post, learn how to record voice narration in Adobe Premiere Pro. In addition, discover the different audio effects that you can use to achieve a perfect voice for your videos.
How To Record Voice Narration
Recording a voice narration for your video in Premiere Pro is a straightforward process. You’ll just have to click the Microphone icon on the left side of your timeline. Once it’s enabled, you can then start talking to record your voice.
Effects Inside Essential Sound Panel
After recording your voiceover, you might want to enhance it to make it sound better, polished, and professional. Don’t fret because Adobe Premiere Pro has an all-in-one panel that gives you an extensive toolset for any audio mixing tasks.
The following are some of the audio effects that you can use to edit, repair, and improve audio using the Essential Sound Panel.
Effect #1: Loudness Settings
There are instances when audio clips have problems with loudness levels. It can be tedious to manually adjust each section of the clips especially when you have 30-minutes long or more clips. However, Premiere Pro has a tool called auto-match loudness that helps with this problem.
The auto-match loudness allows you to have a consistent audio volume on your entire track. By enabling this feature, Premiere Pro will analyze the different loudness levels within the clip and unify them. To do this just enable the Loudness tab, then click Auto-Match.
Effect #2: Clarity settings
The clarity settings is where you can further enhance your recording. Under this tab, you’ll find three primary audio effects: Dynamics, EQ, and Vocal Enhancer.
Dynamics allows you to compress or expand the dynamic range of your recording. You can adjust the range between focused and natural.
EQ allows you to reduce or boost selected frequencies in your recording. You can manually modify the amount by simply using a slider. Moreover, presets are also available, which are helpful for automatic changes.
Finally, Vocal Enhancer allows you to amplify the voice based on the tone of the recording.
Effect #3: Creative Settings
Another tab in the Essential Sound Panel is Creative. This tab can be used to transform your recording to sound like it was recorded in a particular type of environment. For example, if you want to sound like you are inside a church, you can select Church from the presets. You are also free to adjust the amount of reverb by using the slider.
Overall, the Essential Sound Panel offers a range of audio effects that can be easily applied and adjusted. These are perfect for beginners. However, Premiere Pro doesn’t stop there. The software has more features to offer, which can be used for more advanced editing.
Other Audio Track Effects
Premiere Pro offers several audio effects that can be applied to a certain track or mix. These tools provide even more customization than the ones in the Essential Sound Panel. Let’s discuss a few of these audio effects that can be helpful to perfect your voice narration.
Parametric Equalizer
The Parametric Equalizer (EQ) adjusts the balance between different frequencies in your audio recording. With parametric EQ, you can enhance certain frequencies or reduce others. It can help you fix issues like low-end rumble and harsh high-end frequencies.
Premiere Pro offers a few good EQ presets. Most of the time, you can just choose a preset and call it a day. But in some cases, you will need to modify the preset. One example of a good preset to enhance voice narration is the Vocal Enhancer preset. I use it often as it helps make my voice sound crisp and clear.
Chorus/Flanger
Chorus is another audio effect in Premiere Pro that is often used to thicken and widen audio tracks to add texture, fullness, and richness to a track. This effect simulates multiple voices or instruments playing in unison by slightly varying the pitch and timing.
The same with Parametric EQ, Chorus/Flanger also offers several good presets. In addition, the Chorus tab offers controllers that you can modify to adjust different parameters such as speed and intensity. One good Chorus preset I use for voice narrations is Thick Chorus. You might want to try it.
Hard Limiter
The last audio effect you may want to apply to your voice narrations is a hard limiter. This is a tool that can be used to avoid clipping on your audio. If you are not familiar, clipping is an audio distortion that happens when the audio signal is too loud, which results in fuzzy or poor-quality audio.
To access the hard limiter tab, go to Effects > Amplitude and Compression > Hard Limiter. Then set the Maximum Amplitude to -1dB.
Final Thoughts
Adobe Premiere Pro is not only good for video editing but also offers powerful tools to record, edit, and enhance voice narrations. If you want easy-to-use audio effects, the Essential Sound Panel is all you need. Moreover, advanced features such as Parametric Equalizer are also available for more in-depth audio editing.
