Audacity, the free and open source audio editor, has just released version 3.6 and it’s packed with features that might just earn it the gold medal in the audio editor race!
New Real-Time Compressor
The star of the show is undoubtedly the new real-time compressor. This feature brings professional compression capabilities to Audacity, rivaling those found in premium DAWs. Here’s what makes it special:
- Real-time visuals: As you adjust settings, you can see the compressor working in real-time, making it easier to dial in the perfect sound.
- Custom parameters: Adjust threshold, ratio, knee, attack, and release times with precision.
- Presets: Save and recall your favorite settings for quick application across projects.
To use the new compressor:
- Select your audio track
- Click the “Effects” button on the track
- Choose “Compressor” from the Audacity Native Effects menu
- Adjust settings while playing back your audio for immediate feedback
Master Channel and Limiter
Audacity 3.6 also introduces a master channel, allowing you to apply effects to your entire mix. This is particularly useful for the new limiter effect, which helps prevent clipping and gives your audio a smooth and produced sound.
To use the limiter on the master channel:
- Scroll to the bottom of your project to find the “Master” track
- Click “Effects” and add the “Limiter”
- Set your threshold (typically around -3 dB for a safe ceiling)
- Play back your project to see the limiter in action
Free Compressor Presets
To help you get started with the new compressor I’m offering a free download of three custom presets:
- Natural: A subtle compression for general use
- Podcast: Ideal settings for spoken word content
- Radio Imaging: Punchy settings for radio station IDs
