Cinematic audio can elevate your listeners’ listening experience, turning basic footage into something immersive. In this video, I’ll discuss four audio effects in DaVinci Resolve that can make your audio sound cinematic.
Use Equalizer
Equalizers are common audio effects found in almost all audio editing software. They are powerful tools that allow you to manipulate audio frequencies. With an equalizer, you can easily boost or cut certain frequencies of your audio projects to achieve the desired effect.
There are 3 common actions you can do using a Parametric Equalizer. The first is to roll off base, which eliminates the inaudible parts of the audio. The next is to enhance the high-end frequencies to make your voice sound clearer and crispier. And finally, dialing in the mid-frequencies to avoid audio clipping.
Overall, the equalizer is a powerful and easy-to-use tool for removing unwanted sections of the audio and enhancing important parts of the project. It can daunting but once you learn how to use the tool, it can be very helpful in making your audio project sound cinematic.
Utilize Dynamics
Dynamics is another tool in DaVinci Resolve that can help shape your audio and fix problems with audio levels that vary too much such as having speakers that talk much quieter than others.
There are a few audio effects inside the Dynamics window that you can manipulate. These include a compressor, limiter, and expander. Each works differently but do note that you don’t need to modify each effect. Only use what’s needed for your project.
For example, the compressor compresses the high bits of your voice down, making it easier to listen to. On the other hand, the limiter sets a certain limit so your audio will not be able to go any higher and avoid clipping.
Overall, Dynamics is a great tool for your audio to maintain a consistent volume and improve the listener’s listening experience.
Adjust Multiband Compressor
The multiband compressor is a powerful tool in DaVinci Resolve that allows you to compress different frequency bands independently. It provides greater control over complex sounds, such as music and layered effects.
What you can do using this tool is to set the threshold for each band. For example, you may compress lower frequencies to tighten up the bass and reduce muddiness. On the other, you can apply a lighter compression on mid and high frequencies to keep vocals and high-end details clear.
Next, you’ll want to adjust the compression ratio for each band. For instance, a lower ratio for mid frequencies and a higher ratio for low frequencies can result in a tighter and cleaner sound.
Overall, the multiband compressor lets you shape the sound in a detailed, cinematic way, particularly useful when you have a project of both dialogue and complex music.
Add Reverb
Reverb adds depth and atmosphere, which is crucial for a cinematic sound. Whether you’re aiming for a sense of space or an emotional resonance, reverb can help you achieve it.
The Reverb window can be overwhelming to look at especially because there are a lot of dial controls. While each dial works differently, you’ll only be using a few of these.
For example, the Reverb time determines how long the reverb effect lingers. Shorter decay times are ideal for smaller spaces while longer times can create the impression of vast spaces.
The next you’ll likely manipulate is the pre-delay dial. This controls the amount of time before the reverb kicks in. It’s helpful for projects with dialogue, which gives clarity while still adding depth.
Furthermore, The wet and dry controls are important to learn. The wet mix controls the amount of reverb, while the dry mix preserves the original sound. The goal is to have a balance that subtly enhances the audio without overpowering it.
Overall, adding reverb enhances the realism of your audio. The subtle atmosphere of reverb can add an immersive quality to your cinematic audio.
