Generative Extend – Premiere Pro Feature Review

generative extend - Generative Extend - Premiere Pro Feature Review

Adobe Premiere Pro continues to give users features that make editing easier. In this blog post, let’s talk about a promising Adobe tool called Generative Extend. Let’s discuss what it is, what it does, and what are some of its limitations. Moreover, I’ll share some tips on how to go about those limitations using other Adobe features.

What is Generative Extend?

Generative Extend is an AI-driven tool in Premiere Pro that allows editors to seamlessly extend video and audio clips beyond their original duration. It uses Adobe’s Firefly AI technology to generate additional frames at the end of the clip. These generated frames blend seamlessly with the original clip. This tool can be used to fill gaps and extend sequences without needing additional footage.

How To Use Generative Extend

Generative Extend is designed to be intuitive and simple to use, so that even beginners can easily use it. Here’s how:

First, enable the Generative Extend Tool by clicking its icon on the left side of your timeline.

Then simply select and drag the end of the video clip until your desired duration (up to 2 seconds for videos).

Finally, you’ll just have to wait for the AI to finish generating the extra frames. The whole process is the same for both audio and video clips. The only difference is that you can generate up to 10 seconds for audio files.

You have the option to change the generated video or audio frames if you don’t like it. To do this, just double click the generated segment and select Generate Again.

You can also give feedback by selecting either Good Output or Poor Output. You can report any problem you encountered or any suggestions you have. Doing this will help Adobe make certain improvements to the tool.

Limitations and Alternatives

While Generative Extend is an amazing tool, it has a few limitations. As always, I don’t want to just pinpoint these limitations without giving you solutions. So let’s discuss how to go about these drawbacks.

Only 2 Seconds of Video Extension

When working with video clips, Generative Extend can only generate up to 2 seconds of your original file. This might not be sufficient for most projects.

Generative Extend Inception is a great way to solve this problem. What it does is it gives you an inception version where you’ve got the extension within another sequence. This inception then can be extended by another 2 seconds using Generative Extend.

To do this, enable the Selection Tool by pressing V on your keyboard and then double click the “Ai-generated” text below the generated section.

An inception version will be available at the end of your clip (in another sequence).

You can then extend this inception by using the Generative Extend tool.

Cannot Extend Music

Another limitation Generative Extend has is that it cannot extend some types of audio, such as music. However, there’s a tool that existed in Premiere Pro for a long time that can solve this problem. It’s called Remix Tool.

The Remix Tool analyzes a sample and rearranges sections to extend or shorten it naturally. What’s even good about this is that the works instantly. So you don’t need to wait just like you do when using Generative Extend.

To do this, enable the Remix Tool by selecting its icon on the left side of your timeline.

Then select the edge of your audio clip and drag until your desired length.

How Good are the Generated Frames?

The generated video frames I got while testing this tool are pretty good. The consistency of the backdrop, the clothing I’m wearing, and the lighting are okay. Moreover, it doesn’t deviate much from what the subject is doing.

As for audio, the AI-generated sections keep the same theme of the same sounds. With that, you can’t tell that it is AI-generated and sounds like it has always been a continuation of the original audio.

Overall, the extensions generated using Generative Extend are pretty decent. Some might need regeneration, but I think that it will be better with improvements to the tool in the future.

Final Thoughts

Generative Extend is a promising tool that allows users to lengthen clips easily using Premiere Pro. Although it has limitations, Adobe offers other features that can solve those drawbacks. If you want to learn more about how to edit easier, this AI-driven tool is worth checking.
